Schaefer, who has worked with boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya for over a decade as CEO of Golden Boy Promotions resigned from the company last year and has since remained silent on his new career path. But speculations are high he will eventually join or partner with Al Haymon and Floyd Mayweather.
The Schaefer-De La Hoya breakup has been attributed to Oscar’s efforts in patching things up with business rival Bob Arum of Top rank promotions, a move Schaefer did not not particularly like.
Schaefer and Arum have been in a cold war of sorts, oftentimes criticizing each other on some business as well as ethical issues that usually lead to breakdown of negotiations.
Schaefer is particularly concerned about De La Hoya’s efforts to do business again with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions.
In a recent interview with Ben Thompson of Fight Hype, Mayweather revealed his desire to work with Schaefer in 2016.
“I would love to do work with Richard Schaefer. Sometimes in life, you get certain chess pieces that you want and you know with certain chess pieces that you get, you’re not going to lose. If you got Mayweather and Haymon and Richard Schaefer, that’s a win-win situation with us three working together. Richard Schaefer was the mastermind behind Canelo. He helped take Canelo to the next level.” Mayweather said.
“Richard Schaefer is a real stand-up guy; a very, very stand-up guy. I don’t really understand this when I sit back right here and just think. How can Richard Schaefer help Oscar make unbelievable money as far as investments and…I would never do a guy wrong like that. That’s not right. I’m very, very blessed and very, very thankful. I’m sitting very, very well. You know, me and Al sit down and we have unbelievable talks about different fighters that we’re trying to take to the next level to surpass Floyd Mayweather.” he added.
Before partnering with De la Hoya, Schaefer was a Swiss banker who made a mark in the US banking industry when he steered the UBS Bank operations in the US into a huge financial concern with over two trillion dollars in assets.
