Marquez targets tune-up bout ahead of possible Cotto fight

Marquez said Cotto is interested but he wants to make sure that Cotto comes down to the welterweight limit of 147 pounds before he commits himself.

“Cotto wants to fight with me. We will see. It is a great fight for me. I start training right now. I want to have a preparation fight first then see how I feel. It is an incredible rivalry,” said Marquez in reference to the Mexico versus Puerto Rico rivalry.

“Cotto wants to fight with me at 147. If Cotto gives the fight at 147 and I feel good, let’s do the fight,” Marquez told BoxingScene.com.

Marquez, who served as commentator for ESPN Deportes during the Pacquiao-Cotto fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday night, said earlier in February that he wants the Cotto fight because it would be a win-win situation for both of them.

“I think the [fight is a] win-win for both fighters. If you win, then you win over a great fighter. And if you lose, then you also lose to a great fighter. It doesn’t hurt [your career and legacy,” he said.

Marquez has been inactive for two years due to his knee injury. His last fight was against Mike Alvarado which he won via a unanimous decision.

Marquez, who turns 42 on August 23, rose to stardom when he knocked out perennial rival Manny Pacquiao in the closing seconds of the sixth round of their title fight in 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
