Juan Manuel Marquez open to Mayweather rematch

Marquez‘s statement came in the wake of rumors that Mayweather is considering Marquez for his retirement fight on Sept. 12.

Mayweather is just a fight away from completing his $200 million six-fight contract with Showtime Sports.

On Sept.12, Mayweather will attempt to duplicate legendary Rocky Marciano’s world record of retiring unbeaten with 49 pro fights to his credit.

Mayweather is coming off a unanimous decision win against Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao last May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas,Nevada.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has broken world records as the richest fight in boxing history, having generated over four million pay-per-view buys worth at least $400 million.

In his statement about the rumored fight, Marquez revealed Mayweather’s secret of staying unbeaten in his nearly 20 years as a professional boxer.

“Look, do you know how Mayweather can be beaten? Only by knockout and how can you knock out an opponent that does not want to fight, doesn’t throw punches, and hits you with the jab and you may have won the round but give it to him,” Marquez told Boxing Scene.

Mayweather and Marquez fought in 2009 with Mayweather winning via a unanimous decision. Marquez said if the fight is offered, he will accept with some conditions which he did not reveal.

“If the fight is proposed and the conditions are acceptable, then of course [I would do it]. But we all know how things are done when fighting Mayweather in Las Vegas. In that city the officials protect him, let him do everything. Fighting him is a burden,” Marquez said.

Marquez has not fought for over a year due to his recurring knee injury. His last fight was against Mike Alvarado on May 17, 2014 which ended in a unanimous decision victory in his favor.
