Juan Manuel Marquez mulls ring return after failed Cotto fight

Marquez is best remembered for his knockout win against Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao in 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After his victory over Pacquiao, the famous Mexican counter puncher fought Pacquiao’s former foe Timothy Bradley, losing via a split decision in 2013 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In May 2014, Marquez came back to win a split decision against Mike Alvarado to bag the WBO International welterweight title the The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Marquez has since been inactive due to knee injury. He has been trying to stage a tune up fight during his talks with Cotto hoping that the Puerto Rican will agree to face him at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. Cotto was willing to go down at 150 to accommodate Marquez and was even willing to go further down to 149 but the 43-year old Mexican fighter turned down Cotto’s offer.

“I have no regrets [over rejecting Cotto’s terms], because we tried to make the fight but in the end he did not accept 147 pounds and wanted 150. For me, fighting at 150 pounds was to giving up too much and it was a big benefit for them. Him going down to 147, maybe it was the same.” said Marquez after Cotto declined to face him at 147 pounds.

Longtime trainer Nacho Beristain is supportive of Marquez return fight even if he prefers to see him retired.

“The truth is that for now there is nothing on my mind. I do not feel that I’m in a position where I can truly say that I’ll return or that were are definitely not going to do anything. We’ll see what happens, we’ll move forward and see what the future holds,” Marquez said.

Marquez did not say who will be his next opponent if he decides to stage his farewell fight. But he has talked about capturing a fifth world title is as many weight classes before finally retiring for good.
