Djokovic, only days away from the Montreal Masters title match, complained that the pungent smell of marijuana had made its way to the tennis court during the semi-final matches of the tournament.
After the match finished, Djokovic told the umpire on the court that he felt dizzy from the smell of cannabis. Djokovic told reporters that he hoped that whoever the culprit was would not be back for the finals match.
After his victory in the semi-final, Djokovic would take on his longtime rival, Andy Murray, in the final match.
Djokovic is currently the world’s number one men’s tennis player. His semi-finals opponent, Chardy, was having a fantastic week in Montreal until his match with Djokovic. Chardy said, “Every time I play against him, I have a lot of problems.”
Andy Murray also made comfortable strides towards the final match. Murray took on Kei Nishikori and finished the set in only one hour and five minutes.
This latest victory will propel Murray to the world’s number two ranking in men’s tennis. That places him just one spot below Djokovic.
Spectators chose favorites in what would be a very difficult match on 16 August. Murray, who was very capable of a win, had not managed to best Djokovic since he took home the Wimbledon title for Great Britain in 2013.
Despite Murray’s recent losses, many people believed that he could still take on and beat Djokovic.
Though the two are closely matched, Djokovic has not had a serious setback like Murray’s back injury.
This even pairing resulted in a three hour tennis match on Sunday. The final lasted three times as long as the semi-finals.
While it is possible that Djokovic suffered from the effects of second-hand smoke until Sunday afternoon, it is clear that he and Murray were evenly matched. Murray’s win is Djokovic’s loss. However, it is still only his fourth loss of the year.
