Marquez is securing a fight against Cotto because he believes the fight will be a win-win situation for the two of them.
“I think the [fight is a] win-win for both fighters. If you win, then you win over a great fighter. And if you lose, then you also lose to a great fighter. It doesn’t hurt your career and legacy,” Marquez said.
But Bob Arum, who promotes Marquez in collaboration with Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, is not keen on making arrangements for a Cotto fight, saying the Puerto Rican fighter is just too big for Marquez.
“Marquez is more of a junior welterweight. The idea of him fighting Cotto doesn’t make any sense. He’s too big,” Arum said.
While Arum can make arrangements for a Cotto fight — having promoted him for many years — it would be easier for for the 84-year-old promoter to work on the proposed Crawford-Marquez fight, as they are both currently fighting under his Top Rank Promotions banner.
Marquez, who turns 42 on August 23, rose to stardom when he knocked out perennial rival Manny Pacquiao in the closing seconds of the sixth round of their title fight in 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
If Crawford retains his WBO light welterweight title against Hank Lundy this Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York, there is a good chance he will face Marquez later this year.
