Broner is the current WBA Light Welterweight champion and is set to face former British light welterweight champion Ashley Theophane in a title fight, but no date and venue have been set.
In a video interview on fighthype.com, Broner said he actually got a call from Michael Koncz, the Canadian adviser of Pacquiao.
“I hear they want me to fight Pacquiao next…Michael Koncz actually called me…we waiting to hear from him…I love fighting southpaws, man…he’s a great guy…it’ll be a hell of a fight…young rising star against an elite Hall of Famer going out,” stated 4-division world champion Adrien Broner, who revealed details about a conversation he had with Manny Pacquiao’s adviser about a potential fight.
If Koncz can persuade Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum to include Broner in his shortlist of Pacquiao’s possible opponents for his next fight, there will be three names again in the list instead of two which include Terence Crawford and Timothy Bradley.
Arum’s original list includes Amir Khan but the British challenger has decided to walk away from the fight in exasperation for having waited weeks and months for both camps to agree on the terms of the fight.
Most often, Arum prefers to match fighters who are under contract with his own Top Rank Promotions (TR), which is why Bradley and Crawford have been included in the list. This was evident in the case of Amir Khan, who was earlier included in the list although he has not been officially dropped.
Earlier, Koncz told mb.com.ph there is no need to rush in naming Pacquiao’s next foe, saying, “We are not giving a strict timetable. I can’t tell exactly when because the fight’s in April (anyway).”
For his part, Arum said he can wait for Pacquiao’s decision until the end of the month.
