2016 NFL Schedule: Preseason week 2

Heading into this week’s action, several story lines across the league are making news. The tales include the quarterback battle in Denver, but after a strong showing by all three signal callers in a win over Chicago, this week’s home contest against San Francisco could play a major role in who finally gets the starting nod and tries to help this franchise win another Super Bowl title.

Most experts are predicting New England to win the AFC East yet again; but with Tom Brady out of action in the first four games, its important for backup Jimmy Garoppolo to have a strong showing. Last week against New Orleans the youngster completed 11 of 18 passes for 168 yards, but he did struggle when under pressure and he’s sure to see more blitz packages when the Patriots host Chicago on Thursday night.

The most surprising story of this past week’s action was the play of Green Bay’s two young signal callers battling for the third spot on the depth chart. Undrafted rookies Joe Callahan and Marquise Williams both played well in the Packers win over Cleveland. Callahan finished the game 16 of 23 for 124 yards and one touchdown. Williams wasn’t as sharp, but his mobility and ability to handle pressure had to impress the coaching staff.

While both of these young men aren’t likely to see any action in the 2016 NFL season, they could find a job in the league if one or both are released before the start of the regular season.

This week’s action should see starters get a bit more action with many playing into the second quarter. Fans and especially fantasy football owners will get a better look at the rising stars. And despite the fact that the games matter little in terms of who wins or loses, it does help answer questions for each team with the start of the regular season just around the corner.
