2016 NBA Mock Draft: Domantas Sabonis best option for Raptors?

Despite the play of center Bismack Biyombo in the playoffs, this franchise lacks depth in the front court and with the youngster possibly leaving through free agency, the front office must add some size and depth in the front court or risk losing the momentum this team has built over the past couple of seasons.

With two picks in the first round later this month and room under the salary cap to add some veteran experience, the center, power forward, and small forward positions cold have a much different look in the coming weeks.

Blake Murphy of Raptors Republic did a nice job breaking down what the team could do with the ninth overall selection. Rumors have hit social media of a possible trade, a move that could land the veteran this franchise needs, especially with the lack of interest most free agents show towards the Canadian city, but with a good crop of talented big men available, help could be had through the draft.

Gonzaga big man Domantas Sabonis is a perfect example. The 6’10” youngster has the size to play center or power forward, has terrific hands in a crowd, and fits the need of this franchise. With good pedigree, his dad played for the Russian National side before taking his game to the NBA, Sabonis will have help with every aspect of the game, on and off the court.

Chad Ford used twitter to post his liking of Henry Ellison and his ability to stretch the floor with his three point shooting. The former McDonald’s All American had a solid couple of years at Marquette, but he’s not the bullying type in the paint, despite his solid 6’10” frame.

It appears that most basketball experts are projecting a wing player at the 27th pick for Toronto. A youngster with size, but also the ability to run the floor and play good defense.

DeAndre Bembry fits the mold at 6’6″ and terrific overall athleticism. The former St Josephs small forward can play the two or three spot on the floor, giving the coaching staff some flexibility with the lineup and another three point threat off the bench.

Both of these youngsters would help immediately, but for the Raptors to become a true championship contender, they will need to lure a big name star north of the border or pull off a blockbuster trade over the summer.
