The Toronto Blue Jays (85-64) are flying high in the American League East with a 2.5 game lead over New York, but with the Yankees (82-66) in front for the wild card race, it does appear both franchises will be playing post season baseball.
Baltimore (73-76), Tampa Bay (72-76), and Boston (71-77) haven’t played well enough over the last two weeks to stay in the race and for the fans of these teams, it looks like they must wait until next year for a shot to win a World Series.
The AL Central crown has been decided with Kansas City (87-62) making it back-to-back years of making the post season. The Royals are one of the best teams in baseball this year and are a legitimate contender for a championship.
Minnesota (76-73) is sitting 11 games back in the division, but the Twins are just 2.5 games behind New York in the AL wild card race. Cleveland (74-74) still has an outside chance of playoff baseball, but the Indians will need to play near perfect over the last two weeks to keep their hopes alive.
Out west is where the real race is on with the red hot Texas Rangers (80-69) taking over the top spot in September, but with Houston finally winning two straight games, the Astros (79-71) are just a game and a half back, but also tied with the Yankees for a wild card berth.
The National League isn’t as exciting with only one race yet decided. The NL East has a surprising outcome with the NY Mets (84-65) having a great season.
St Louis has been the best team in baseball all year, but it hasn’t been easy for the Cardinals (93-56) with Pittsburgh (89-60) pushing them over the last couple of months. Chicago (87-62) has made this the best division in the MLB this year and all three franchises will play post season ball.
The NL West has become a one team race with the LA Dodgers (85-63) pulling away with a seven game lead. It did look like San Francisco (78-71) would be more of a challenge, but the Giants just couldn’t win enough on the road to stay in contention.
