An explosion and possible building collapse reported around 3:20 p.m. this afternoon has led to fears that people may be injured or dead, trapped in the rubble. According to witnesses at the scene, the fire has been so hot, along with the fear of further explosions, that firefighters are having difficulties getting close to the fire.
The collapse occurred at 125 Second Avenue, which is a residential and commercial building. There is a restaurant on the first floor, and it is believed a gas leak caused the explosion, according to CNN. Fire has fully engulfed at least two buildings at the location.
One witness reported hearing a loud explosion at the five-story building at the corner of 2nd. Avenue and 7th. Street. Streets for several blocks around the fire have been closed to traffic as firefighters work to bring the flames under control. More than 25 units and over 100 firefighters are involved at the scene.
According to CBS New York, the Department of Building records indicate there was a stop-work order on the building. At this time, Con-Edison has shut off gas lines in the area. Images from the scene show both buildings in flames as hook-and-ladder crews attempt to control the raging fire.
It is not known at this time if anyone has been injured or killed in this explosion. This is a breaking story.
