New Indiegogo project aims to let you 'step inside your phone'

A new iPhone 6 case seeking crowd-funding right now is aiming to bring virtual reality to the masses by allowing your phone to "unfold" into a virtual reality headset with integrated controls, dubbed "pinchers".

Developed by Toronto, Canada-based digital agency Cordon Media Inc, the product is called Pinć (pronounced "Pinch") and is controlled by rings worn on the index fingers of the user. These allow for optical control so that the user can interact with the virtual environment they're seeing. Previous Cordon ventures include immersive and futuristic interfaces for touchscreen applications, but they are now looking towards entering the mainstream consumer market.
The prototype is currently patent-pending and represents the first ever pocket-sized virtual reality platform. Built around iOS for iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, with Android compatibility in the works, it aims to incorporate spatial computing, browsing and multitasking to create an immersive mobile virtual reality experience.

The entire setup will consist of four distinct parts when complete. Firstly, a special protective case is fitted to your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. Made of quality composite materials, it secures your phone while still facilitating full access to the screen and connectivity ports. This connects to a special, slim form-factor virtual reality headset. Streamlined and thin, it is designed to be more comfortable to wear than existing VR products.
The system is controlled by an app on the phone that links to the optical control system to allow multi-touch gestures and spatial operating capabilities by simply moving your fingers. The output is fed back to the virtual reality headset to complete the immersion and give the unique effect of true virtual reality. The key difference to other products is the optical control rings that allow for physical input to the system.
The team is seeking to raise $100,000 using crowd-funding site Indiegogo before December 23rd, in order to make the project a reality. They will use the money to refine the manufacturing process to allow more efficient production of the unit and to improve the comfort, design and wearability of both the Pinć headset itself, as well as Pincher optical control rings so that the form-factor is more comfortable for extended use.
Cordon also intends to create a virtual reality lens for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus camera, this to allow better immersion for the user with more accurate tracking. If all goes to plan, the company's SDK will be released to the iOS development community so that third-parties can tap into the power of Pinć from their own products and incorporate virtual reality gestures too. Perhaps this is the start of a new method of interacting with our mobile devices? If so, I am looking forward to seeing what Cordon Media has in store for this product.
