The invitation to the singer-songwriter was issued despite recent speculation by the National Football League that it was considering charging performers to appear at the halftime show of the game, seen annually by more than 100 million viewers in North America.
The Super Bowl game decides the league championship, and will be played Feb. 1 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Az.
Perry had long been rumored as a featured performer for the game, along with Rhianna and Coldplay, but in a college football broadcast that appeared around the time of the NFL's statement, Perry said she would not perform at the game without being paid, according to the New York Post newspaper's Page Six gossip page.
“I’m not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl,” Perry said at the time, and the NFL declined comment.
But Thursday, Page Six said Perry was negotiating with the NFL to perform at the game, quoting an unnamed insider.
“A deal is being hammered out for Katy to play the Super Bowl,” the insider told Page Six.
Perry had gotten favorable consideration because her performances are considered more "family friendly" than Rhianna's, Page Six said, and the league is particularly sensitive at a time of recurring scandals involving top players.
Singer-songwriter Bruno Mars performed in February of this year.
Previous performers at the Super Bowl have included Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones.
