"The Bob Newhart Show: The Complete Series" is a most welcome addition to Shout! Factory’s collection of classic TV series on DVD. If you missed this show the first time around, here’s an opportunity to catch up with this iconic sitcom.

Bob Newhart made his mark as a standup comedian in the 1960s, initially finding fame by being his own one-man comedy team. Oddly enough, he was the straight man of that team. Some of his most famous routines were one-sided phone conversations with the likes of Abe Lincoln and Sir Walter Raleigh, where a deadpan Newhart affected a slight stammer as he attempted to get to the bottom of the caller’s problem. He recorded albums using this comedic formula and even won a Peabody award for his 1961 variety program The Bob Newhart Show.
You may not think of Bob Newhart’s comedy as groundbreaking but consider this: what other successful standup comedian of this era went on to have his own hit situation comedy show? In recent years Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond), George Lopez (George Lopez), Louis C.K. (Louie), and other such comics have had shows based on their standup routines. But it all started with Newhart.
Newhart’s first sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show, aired from 1972 to 1978, and cast Newhart as Dr. Robert Hartley, a Chicago psychologist, whose job it was to treat a group of oddball, neurotic patients. Although Hartley was good at what he did, his charges tried his patience at times. But with the support of his wife Emily (Suzanne Pleshette), he always muddled through. With his deadpan delivery and everyman appeal, the former standup comedian became a hugely popular television star.
The Bob Newhart Show
was one of the most popular sitcoms of its time but has never been released as a complete series on DVD until now. On May 27, Shout! Factory released The Bob Newhart Show: The Complete Series. The set consists of all 142 episodes on 19 DVDs and includes new interviews with Newhart and cast members Jack Riley, Bill Daily, Peter Bonerz, and Michael Zinberg.
Also included in the set:
The original un-aired pilot, The Bob Newhart Show 19th Anniversary (1991), in which the entire cast assembles for a one-hour clip show, audio commentaries, a gag reel, and a 40 page booklet which includes an essay by Emmy winning writer Vince Waldron.
