Multiple reports have Toronto Maple Leafs' GM Dave Nonis on the verge of handing defenceman Dion Phaneuf a whack of dough. One, from TSN radio, claims to know how much: $50 million over 7 years. That would make him one of the NHL's top paid defenders.

While speculation is that Phaneuf, 28, who leads the Leafs in ice-time per game at 24:21 and is 25th in the NHL, is set to sign and that a sticking point is a no-trade clause, he's not saying anything. After a skate Friday morning to prepare for tonight's tilt with the Buffalo Sabres, the captain wasn't saying much of anything.
“That’s something that’s being handled by my agent,” he told media about the rumors. “So I’m not going to comment on it much more than that.”

Phaneuf came to Toronto in January of 2010 in a 7-player-deal and has been the team's anchor on defence since. Sometimes criticized by fans for mistakes, he's nonetheless the coach's go-to guy, both when the team is ahead late and when they need a goal.
Statistically his best season in Toronto was in the 2011-12 season when he had 12 goals and 32 assists for 44 points and his career numbers are 109-244-353 in 637 games played. This season in 37 games he has 3 goals, 10 assists and is a plus11.
Phaneuf is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at season's end. Should he get the contract speculation says he will, it would put him at just over $7 million a season, behind Shea Weber (U.S. $7.8) Ryan Suter (U.S. $7.5), on a virtual par with Brian Campbell (U.S. $7.15) and just ahead of Drew Doughty (U.S. $7).
