Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, Moffat said, “We had to inform the BBC that Martin [Freeman[ and Benedict [Cumberbatch] had commissioned a new series. They signed themselves up. They both announced that they were carrying on – so that’s good.”
Fans of the hit BBC drama series are eagerly awaiting confirmation of a start date for season 3, which has already been filmed and is expected to air sometime this winter.
More importantly, viewers will find out how Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) survived his fatal fall at the close of season 2.
Radio Times reports that Moffat – who is also the showrunner for the BBC’s long-running science-fiction series, Doctor Who – said, “Benedict, at some red carpet event somewhere, said he was carrying on forever. Martin, at another one, said, ‘Yep, series four is happening’.”
Of the eagerly anticipated third season, Moffat added, “I assume that unless we’ve really screwed [it] up – which we haven’t – it’s a big success and it will carry on, so long as Benedict and Martin want to do it.”
