It was co-produced by Derek George and Mickey Jack Cones.
"Just Let Me Fall in Love With You" is a strong opening track that instantly grab the listeners' attention and sustains is throughout. It is followed by the refreshing and upbeat "Hard To Be Cool," which is one of my personal favorite tunes on the CD.
Equally noteworthy are "Baby You're In Love With Me" and "Yeah," the latter of which has a lot of potential to become a radio single for Nichols.
"Billy Graham's Bible" is traditional country at its best and "Better Than Beautiful" is lyrically captivating. His lead-off single "Sunny and 75" is a breath of fresh air and it deserves to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts.
"Y'ant To" is a fun and diverse tune and "Hee Haw" has a vibe that is reminiscent to his chart-topping single "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off."
"Love Has A Way" is a stunning love song and "Smile on Mine" is yet another favorite track on the collection.
"Open Up A Can" has a laid-back vibe to it since it is a party tune. "Old School Country Song" is a traditional country gem and infectious melody; moreover, its fiddle solo brings it to a higher level.
His version of "Footlights" would have certainly made country living legend Merle Haggard proud, as Joe Nichols is certainly the closest heir to "The Hag" that country music has to offer. With his rendition, Nichols tips his hat both to Haggard and his late father.
The 16-track CD closes with the title track "Crickets," where Nichols leaves his fans yearning for more.
The Verdict
Overall, Joe Nichols is back stronger than ever with his latest album. It is one of his best works to date, if not his best. The fact that it contains 16 songs is a real treat and its production is brilliant. You can really hear Nichols' heart on this album and his love for the country genre. Out of all the CDs released by male country artists in 2013, this records ranks in my top 3. It garners an A+ rating. No album collection is complete without Nichols' Crickets.
