Delta cuts ads from ‘The Daily Show’ over Catholic League's fury
Delta Air has pulled its ads from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart ,” following the Catholic League’s outrage from a skit featuring a naked woman with her legs spread and a manger in between that the host called a “vagina manger."
"We're always re-evaluating our advertising opportunities and updating our strategy in an effort to reach our desired audience." Delta Air Lines spokesperson Leslie Parker said in a statement Tuesday, CNN
"Delta doesn't discriminate nor do we condone discrimination in regard to age, race, nationality, sexual orientation, religion or gender," Parker's statement continued. She said that Delta made the decision to pull its ads on Thursday.
According to the NY Daily News
, in the April skit, Stewart mocked the Fox News Channel for not covering a so-called Republican “war on women.”
“Maybe women could protect their reproductive organs from unwanted medical intrusions with vagina mangers,” Stewart said jokingly.
But it was no joke for Bill Donohue.
Donohue, president of The Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights, a conservative group, noted that that during the segment a “picture flashed on the screen of a naked woman with her legs spread with a Nativity scene ornament in between.”
In a statement, the Catholic civil rights group called the segment “the most vulgar expression of hate speech ever aired on television.” Donohue demanded Stewart apologize and threatened to pressure the show’s sponsors to pull their advertising if he didn’t.
“What Stewart did wasn’t a joke. It was hate speech," Donohue wrote. "All we want is an apology.”
Not going to happen. According to the Tampa Bay Times
at a stand-up appearance in Florida last month, Stewart had a few words for the Catholic League and their campaign against him.
"I'm not going to censor myself to comfort your ignorance," Stewart said.
What about Kellogg?
The cereal maker said in a statement to the Atlanta Journal Constitution
that they did not have any plans to pull their ads.
“Consumers speak most loudly when they vote with their remote control and change the channel or turn off the TV if a program does not fit their personal criteria,” the statement said.
Not this customer. That won't do for Donohue.
“In other words, Kellogg’s is telling Christians to shove it,” Donohue said in a statement. “But they made a mistake."
Indeed, since Kellogg didn't boycott the Daily Show, Donohue wants people to make a statement with their spoons.
"We are also calling for a national boycott of all Kellogg’s cereals,” Donohue said.
And that's not all. "Tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. ET, I will be interviewed on WBCK in Battle Creek, Michigan, home of Kellogg’s," Donohue wrote in a statement
"The radio station is heard in Kalamazoo, a city where many who work at Kellogg’s reside; the signal extends throughout southern Michigan. In addition, the program, “Live with Renk,” is the #1 show in the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek area," the statement said.
He added: "When we are finished, everyone will know about Stewart’s “vagina manger” stunt," he said. "But we also want the whole country to know how Kellogg’s, once identified as American as apple pie, has now sunk so low that it actually underwrites anti-Christian bigotry."
And just in case the top brass at Kellogg didn't listen to the show, they have another surprise coming.
“Today, all the top management at Kellogg’s will receive a color photo of a naked woman with her legs spread and a nativity scene ornament in between,” he said, adding that “over 700 photos have been sent to leaders in Battle Creek, Michigan." the statement read..
“Let’s see if that jars them.”
