Just three days ago, the Gulf of California was struck by a 6.2 earthquake, followed by a 6.9 earthquake only minutes later. These two earthquakes were centered around 85 miles north of Guerrero Negro, Mexico.
USGS provides the 5.0 earthquake on Monday was located:
152 km (94 miles) E of La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico
164 km (101 miles) WSW of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico
1084 km (673 miles) SSE of PHOENIX, Arizona
1123 km (697 miles) WNW of MEXICO CITY, D.F., Mexico
No damage has been reported. No tsunami warnings have been issued.
This string of earthquakes in the Gulf of California came just hours after a powerful 8.6 and 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia. Scientists are studying whether or not the series of earthquakes are connected, however, they conclude "It's too soon to say exactly what we'll learn," Mr Vidale was quoted as saying by LiveScience. "So far, we're just surprised."
