Earlier this week, Reece Donovan and John Kafunda were convicted of one of the most sickening crimes committed during the riots last August. After Malaysian student Ashraf Rossli was punched in the face and his bicycle stolen, they appeared to help him up, then casually robbed him (see here for report and linked video).
Yesterday, Friday, it was the turn of the man who committed the initial assault to face justice; 18 year old Beau Isagba was gaoled for a total of seven years. The victim was punched in the face so hard that his jaw was broken in two places. Then Isagba proceeded to steal his bicycle leaving him to the mercy of other predators. Although it fell far short of murder, this compound event was one of those crimes that shock the nation: a gratuitous assault followed by an unrelated and quite callous abuse of a vulnerable person. Prime Minister David Cameron was particularly outspoken in his condemnation of it.
