US television is planning a Sherlock Holmes drama series with a twist: set in modern day New York with a female Doctor Watson. The format is very similar to a recent UK BBC TV revival.

CBS have begun filming a new show called “Elementary” (based on the oft quoted Holmesian phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson". Screen Rant notes that the show centers on the detective Sherlock Holmes and it is to be set in contemporary New York. The premise for the series is similar to a recent contemporary Sherlock Holmes revival made by the BBC (called “Sherlock”).
The BBC drama stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and soon-to-be Hobbit star Martin Freedman as Doctor Watson. Six two-hour episodes have been broadcast to date. The show was created the current Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat.
The CBS show had recently announced that it had cast Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock and this week the network announced that Lucy Lui as a female Doctor Watson (Joan Watson), the first known casting of female in this role. The drama is being written and executive produced by Robert Doherty, assisted by Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly.
Johnny Lee Miller has recently played the title character in Eli Stone and was a recurring character in the fifth season of Dexter, about the serial killing police forensics expert. Lucy Lui is perhaps most famous for appearing in Charlie's Angels.
The casting of Jonny Lee Miller as the sleuth Sherlock has some parallels with the BBC version in that Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch recently performed together in Danny Boyle’s acclaimed adaption of “Frankenstein” at London’s National Theatre in 2011.
How similar the US show is to the recent UK revival remains to be seen as few details have yet been released.
