A prominent performer since the age of 19, Marie was signed to Motown records and was taken under the wing of the late Rick James in the 70s.
With a string of popular singles, including "I Need Your Lovin'" and "Lovergirl," Marie would go on to release music on labels such as Epic, Stax (who released her final album) and Lil Wayne's Cash Money imprint.
There has been an outpouring of support and commemorations from the extended online and media community.
"She was an amazing work of art," said Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, drummer of hip-hop band The Roots on his Twitter page.
In an obituary, Pitchfork described Marie as "an explosive singer with a gift for wrapping her voice around the mutating strands of soul music."
Cathy Hughes, the founder of Radio One, told a CNN reporter that she "would always tell her [Marie] that she was one of the greatest vocalists of our time."
Marie - born Mary Christine Brockert - is survived by one daughter, Alia Rose.
