From the Palm Beach Post News via Drudge comes the report that Stephen Howard Schafer, a 38-year-old kite surfer from Stuart, Florida, was attacked and killed by sharks earlier today off the coast of Stuart after landing in the water about a quarter-mile offshore in an unguarded stretch of ocean.
The lifeguard on duty at the beach observed the attack from shore through binoculars, paddled out on a rescue board and brought Schafer back to shore. Rescue workers attempted to resuscitate Schafer with CPR before paramedics brought him to Martin Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Martin County Sheriff's Office is now investigating. According to Sheriff's Capt. Mark McKinley, to his knowledge this is the first shark-related fatality the area has seen in 25 years. Sheriff's deputies are now trying to reach relatives of Schafer, a Jensen Beach resident. No announcement has yet been made as to whether the Stuart beaches will be open tomorrow.
