With Lane Kiffin and half of his staff heading to coach at the University of Southern California, the Volunteers are looking to fill their vacancy fast.
The University of Southern California needed a new head coach and they got the Tennessee Volunteers' head coach Lane Kiffin to quickly agree to be their coach. Now Tennessee’s athletic director Mike Hamilton is looking to fill his vacant head coaching position just as quick.
Hamilton Spoke at a news conference Wednesday discussing his second coaching search in less than two years after Kiffin announced Tuesday night his abrupt resignation to take the same job at USC. Kiffin was hired 14 month ago and coached one season at Tennessee and was 7-6.
According to Hamilton was told by Kiffin Saturday that if the USC job became available he would be interested. By Tuesday Kiffin told Hamilton that he was taking the USC offer. Hamilton is disappointed after giving Kiffin a chance to be a head coach and he hopes to have a football coach in place in the coming days.
National Signing Day for high school seniors is February 3 and it remains to be sign if Tennessee will lose oral commitments now that Kiffin has departed. Kiffin's contract calls for him to pay an $800,000 buyout for leaving Tennessee early.
