For biting off part of Evander Holyfield's ear in their heavyweight title fight 12 years ago in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mike Tyson finally got reconciled with Holyfield and no less than the famous talk show icon Oprah Winfrey made it possible.
In the biting incident during their fight in Las Vegas, the Nevada boxing body disqualified Tyson and declared Holyfield the winner of the match.
Cleveland.com reports:
The ear-biting incident became synonymous with Tyson. Edging out all other comers wasn't easy, given the events that have competed for headlines in his life: a rape conviction, a suit calling him a "serial buttocks fondler," bankruptcy, getting his face tattooed.
"Mutual praise" and "admiration" were said to dominate the Oprah exchange between the men for reasons that lesser men -- certainly not Renaissance men of their ilk -- could not possibly understand.
Although Tyson did not categorically apologised to Holyfield for the ear biting incident, the meeting was more than a gesture of reconciliation.
"This is a beautiful guy," Tyson said, holding Holyfield's arm affectionately for several seconds while fishing in his pocket for a bottle of teriyaki sauce (OK, I made that part up).
"I just want you to know it's just been a pleasure ... being acquainted with you," said Iron Mike.
The two great heavyweight champions have tried to resuscitate their own boxing careers since the 'good old days' when their names were synonymous to boxing.
Holyfield has fought several times at his post prime years mainly for financial considerations as he was rumored to have gone bankrupt due to mismanagement of his earnings by his manager.
Mike Tyson on the other hand has lost several of his fights after their much talked about ear biting bout until he decided to finally quit boxing.
Last May his daughter Exodus died at a hospital in Phoenix after she was caught in a treadmill cord and was reportedly unattended at the time of the accident.
Tyson told Winfrey that he didn’t want to know details of her death because “if somebody’s to blame for it there will be a problem.”
