The campaign says it respects copyright laws and has obtained and paid for licenses from performing right organizations. They have the right to play millions of songs, according to spokesman Brian Rogers.
That hasn't stopped a number of artists from complaining when they hear the campaign use their music. The Foo Fighters is the latest band to request a song to be pulled from the campaign. John Mellencamp, Heart and Jackson Browne have also sent McCain a strong message that they don't want their art to be used in connection to his campaign. Browne has filed a lawsuit.
Yahoo reports on the Foo Fighters who heard their song being played while watching a news report:
"The saddest thing about this is that `My Hero' was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential," the band said in a statement. "To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song."
Barack Obama has also been asked by Sam Moore not to use the song "Soul Man."
