Common Good Coffee Funds Important Work Fighting Poverty In India

Common Good Coffee NZ is a new social enterprise supplying ethical coffee beans. They will distribute Common Good coffee nationally, with a big chunk of their revenue earmarked for social enterprise projects in Kolkata, India.

Common Good Coffee is a collective uniting the philanthropic efforts of three New Zealand businesses. Through partner Joyya, Common Good will give $5 per kilo of beans sold to help fight poverty and human trafficking in four of Kolkata’s worst neighbourhoods. The collective is comprised of Crave café in Morningside, Auckland; the Addington Coffee Co-op in Christchurch; and the Common Ground Coffee in Whanganui.

Each of these New Zealand businesses has a long history of making a difference in their own communities and contributing to causes in India. The people behind all three businesses have also been friends for years but, until now, worked separately.

“The thought was, maybe we could do something together,” says Nigel Cottle, manager of Crave. “Over the last decade, the Addington Coffee Co-op has earmarked over $1 million to social impact work in Kolkata, which is awesome. We want to support what’s going on over there as much as we can.”

Crave café will now serve only Common Good coffee, also supplying businesses in Auckland and the upper North Island.

Addington Coffee Co-op Café manager Age Palmer says this next step in their journey makes perfect sense, as they were looking to update their branding, replacing Jailbreaker roast with Common Good.

“To make Common Good coffee, we roast only the best-tasting Fair Trade coffee beans in small batches throughout Aotearoa, and we’ll be the distributors of the brand in the South Island.”

The collective will supply ethical coffee beans to retail customers as well as distribute the beans to other cafes and offices throughout New Zealand.

Common Good Coffee is now available for delivery nationwide.

About Common Good

Common Good Coffee NZ is a collective that produces, distributes, and brews coffee using sustainably sourced, organic Fairtrade beans. We exist to support positive change in some of the most impoverished neighbourhoods in the world and use only the best-tasting beans, expertly roasted in small batches.

Our profits go towards investment in community transformation. Through our partners at Joyya, we’re starting by donating $5 from every kilo sold, starting with 4 neighbourhoods in Kolkata. By using only Fairtrade supply chains, we also support farmers and their communities, ensuring that everyone is paid a fair wage.

The Common Good family are: Addington Coffee Co-op in Christchurch, Crave and Kind Cafés in Auckland, and the Common Ground Coffee popup in Whanganui.
