A 39-year-old woman, professional coach and international endurance race champion is about to set another Official Guinness World Record while raising money for charity in Long Beach

(PRUnderground) November 29th, 2020

From October 30th to December 2nd, 2020 in Long Beach, California, Shangrila Rendon is attempting a Guinness World Record of the most 140.6-mile triathlon (Full Ironman-distance) races in 34 days. She is on track to completing 24 by December 2nd (Total of 57.6 mi swim, 2688 mi bike, 629.28 mi run).

On Friday 11/27 Shangrila finished her 21st 140.6 Triathlon and has only 3 more races to go. The remaining races of the “Beyond Myself Project” will take place from 5:30 a.m. to about 7:00pm on 11/30, 12/01 and 12/02.

Shangrila Rendon hopes her Beyond Myself Project will not only set a world record, but also lift and inspire others who are facing difficulties. Her ultimate goal is to empower women, help children who are underprivileged and in trauma and assist those who are struggling with PTSD.

The project is raising funds for four nonprofit organizations: the Downtown Women’s Center, the Children’s Institute, Paws 4 Success (which helps individuals with PTSD), and SJVRC (which helps abused children in the Philippines and underprivileged children in Vietnam). Donations can be made at https://www.shangrilarendon.com/beyondmyselfproject.

Shangrila says: “Helping children is very close to my heart due to my past experiences. I had a horrible past. I was abused as a child from about 5 years old up until the age of 19. I was assaulted at 25 years old. Consequentially, I was diagnosed having PTSD and severe depression. Not knowing how to cope, I struggled with alcohol addiction and eating disorder for about 15 years. I was fortunate enough to receive help through outpatient programs, intensive and continued therapies, self-growth seminars and through sports. I feel blessed that I didn’t end my life when I had suicidal ideation at 17 years old. Even though I was a non-runner, non-cyclist, and didn’t know how to swim at 24, I became an athlete. I was able to turn my life around to become a Guinness World Record Holder (2015) as the fastest female to complete five Ironman distance races in five consecutive days.

I would like to pay it forward. I don’t want to have another child and woman go through what I had experienced. I want to make a difference and help others as much as I can.

To reach the 21 140.6 finishes has taken a lot of sacrifices, reminding myself of my WHYs, focusing on the goal and setting aside all negativities. Training and racing alone are already a big undertaking. To organize and plan the entire project, have logistics all set up, volunteers/support & Guinness World Record witnesses show up, raise funds for our 4 non-profit organizations, post social media updates, be available to documentary film team, and ensuring that I’m well, strong and not injured just makes the project so diverse, challenging, exciting and amazing! There have been a lot of moving pieces. I could have not done it without the help and support of everyone!

Let’s finish this project strong together. Jointly we can make a difference”

About Shangrila Rendon

Shangrila Rendon is a pro Ultra Triathlete and the Guinness World Record Holder (2015) as the Fastest Female to complete 5 Ironman in 5 consecutive days, (consisting of 12 mi swim, 560 mi bike, 131 mi run).

From walking for an hour every day to and from her first job in the U.S. at age 17, and spending 15 minutes on a treadmill before work at 19 years old, having no athletic background whatsoever, Shangrila Rendon transformed herself into a world class athlete. She did not have a bike, was afraid of water and did not know how to swim until the age of 29.

Her journey may have started slow as she was juggling being a medical device engineer full-time and completing a Master’s degree at the same time. However, she was fuelled by guts and driven by pure determination to leave behind her horrible past.

She has been thru some dark times – abuse, eating disorder, PTSD, severe depression and alcoholism.

Coach Shangrila has been featured in Triathlete Magazine, The New York Times, Fox28 News, Fox 6 News, Outside Magazine, Endurance Sports & Fitness Magazine, KTFS News Radio, Hungry 4 Hope Toxic Radio, RT News and GMA 7’s news.

Besides being an athlete, she is also an endurance and triathlon coach, who loves helping people see and achieve their true potential in sports.
