With the spread of the ongoing pandemic COVID19, things have become scarier than ever. When the virulence of the novel coronavirus left no age group untouched, Yet the number of child fatalities is less in numbers when compared to other age groups. Children are not immune to the contagion, but statistics show that they tend to survive the pandemic better. However, children need proper care to restrict them from getting in contact with the COVID19.

Dr. Sima Stein MD, a 2020 Three Best Rated® Award-Winning Pediatrician in San Jose, California, shares insights on several aspects of COVID19 related to Children.

“While all children are capable of getting COVID-19, they don’t become sick as often as adults. Children also rarely experience severe illness with COVID-19. Despite many large outbreaks around the world, very few children have died.”, said Dr. Stein.

She further quotes that, According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), among nearly 150,000 cases of COVID-19 in the US between February 12th and April 2nd, only about 2,500, or 1.7%, were in children. It is similar to what has been reported in other countries, such as China and Italy, that have had large outbreaks. Hospitalization rates for children have been much lower than for adults.

While children and adults experience similar symptoms of COVID-19, Dr. Stein points out a slight difference in the children’s symptoms. In children, it tends to be mild and cold-like. Their symptoms can include:

  • Fever

  • Runny nose

  • Cough

  • Fatigue

  • Muscle aches

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

Dr. Stein explains the steps parents must take when children exhibit COVID19 symptoms.

  • Call your child’s health care provider and get the proper treatment.

  • Keep your child at home and away from others as much as possible, except to get medical care.

  • If possible, have your child use a separate bedroom and bathroom from family members.

Dr. Stein says, “With proper care, most children recover within one to two weeks.” She also suggests a few simple preventive measures to protect children from the infection.

  • Keeping hands clean: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Have your kids wash their hands several times a day. Especially before eating and after using the bathroom. Show young children how to create tiny soap bubbles by rubbing their hands together and how to get the soap between fingers and to the ends of their fingers, including their thumbs and the backs of their hands. Encourage your kids to sing the entire “Happy Birthday” song twice (about 20 seconds), so they spend the time they need to get their hands clean.

  • Clean and disinfect your home: Focus on cleaning surfaces every day in common areas that are frequently touched, such as tables, doorknobs, hard-backed chairs, light switches, remotes, electronics, handles, desks, toilets, and sinks. Also, clean areas that easily get dirty, such as a baby’s changing table, and surfaces that your child often touches, such as his or her bed frame, craft table, toy chest, and toys. Use soap and water to clean the toys that your child puts in his or her mouth. Make sure to rinse off the soap and dry the toys. Wash your child’s bedding and washable plush toys, as needed, in the warmest possible setting. Dry all items completely. Wash your hands after handling your child’s belongings.

  • Wear cloth face masks: The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public places, such as the grocery store, where it’s difficult to avoid close contact with others. Make children above the age of 2 to wear a cloth face mask while taking them out. Please avoid making infants less than 2yrs old to wear face masks, as some children might have breathing problems or the children who wouldn’t be able to remove the mask by themselves.

Dr. Stein emphasizes the adherence to the safety measures to protect the children from COVID19.
