FlatironsPlumbing.com Announces Winner of $500 Science Scholarship

FlatironsPlumbing.com, an organization focused on assisting, announced the winner of their $500 scholarship contest held over the summer. Olivia Schmit, enrolled at Western Washington University, studying Biology/Ecology, impressed the panel of judges with her commitment to clean water. The company appreciates that mission.

“As humans became more concentrated in cities, water treatment (or lack thereof) became more of an issue,” writes Schmit in her moving essay, which chronicles the history and global need for water treatment and filtration. “Even rudimentary wastewater treatment drastically decreased the incidence of waterborne illnesses. This set a precedent for many other developed nations at the time. Life expectancies in countries with water treatment went up. This public health intervention has saved countless lives.”

Flatirons Plumbing created the scholarship opportunity as a way to help make college expenses more affordable for those who have chosen to help others by becoming scientists. The panel of scholarship judges selected Schmit as the recipient of the $500 scholarship based on the quality of her essay and her admirable desire to help others. She won out over 10 other applicants.

Participants in the scholarship contest were required to hold a GPA of 3.0 or higher, as well as submit a letter of recommendation and unofficial transcript of their grades along with a 500-1000 word essay answering the question, “What problems do water treatment and filtration solve?”
