Rios Elementary School Dances Their Way into Computer Literacy and Coding

Rios Elementary School in El Cajon, California, America’s first computer science magnet elementary school, focuses on computer science, World of Work, presentation literacy, and core curriculum. Students at Rios learn about computer science and how to produce and operate coding to do things such as debug computers, work on projects, and create games.

One of the highlights of the computer science learning at Rios is the Hour of Code Dance Party. At this Dance Party, students come together to dance and have a good time, while also using code to control dancing characters on a computer. Using code, the students make their characters dance to the music, just like they are!

Rios Elementary Principal, Liz Loether, says “I love watching the kids grow. I love seeing their projects from Kindergarten all the way to fifth grade. I love their hearts lighting up to show off their projects and their hard work.”

Kids as young as four year olds in Early Admittance Kindergarten (EAK) start coding at Rios with the basics like coding Lego Robotics, SCRATCH, Java Script, and, which are all building blocks to higher technology. Project-based learning at Rios means that students dip their hands into coding and finish projects from start to finish, culminating in a presentation on the project.

As these students progress through middle school, high school and even college in their coding, they will be prepared to fill unfilled jobs in fields such as computer science, math, and other STEM fields. The students at Rios Elementary School have such an amazing opportunity to learn about computer science, opening doors to their futures that many students don’t even know exist. The future is bright and the future is coding at Rios!
