Around 7 p.m. on Oct. 12, three-year-old Brayden was at a KFC restaurant in Granbury, Texas with his parents when he suffered a seizure. Granbury is about 40 miles southwest of Fort Worth. While authorities are not releasing much information about his exact medical condition, it is believed the seizure was caused by a high fever. The frantic father called 911 while the boy’s mom took him outside.
Officer Chase Miller was nearby and responded to the call within minutes. The dashcam in his car shows the officer arriving on scene where the toddler was being held by his mother. Miller then takes the boy from his mother, puts him on the ground and begins administering CPR. Brayden’s father is kneeling nearby while his frantic mother appears to be walking around in circles. Brayden’s mom, Bethany, is CPR certified but because it was her own child, she froze.
At one point, Miller gets the dad to continue CPR while he, Miller, goes back to his car to get a CPR mask. After the officer comes back, he continues to perform CPR for another two minutes or so before Brayden began breathing again. The toddler was taken to hospital and has since fully recovered.
The Granbury Police Department later recounted what happened on their Facebook page and the city of Granbury released the dashcam video. Interviewed by a local Fox affiliate, Miller, who had been on the force for only two years, denied he was a hero saying he was just a police officer doing his job. He added, “I never dreamed of making a difference by saving a life.” He also said he was “thankful and blessed.”
A week later, Miller, Brayden and his parents attended a meeting of the Granbury City Council where Mayor Nan Hulett presented a Life Saving Award to the officer. Brayden’s favourite show is Paw Patrol and Chase, a first responder dog, is his favourite character in the show. Brayden was given a Chase doll by his real life hero, Chase.
