Baby sister for Prince George
(editorial note: two days after her birth came the announcement of her name: Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. She’s the Princess of Cambridge.)
Kate was admitted to the hospital in the early stages of labor about two-and-a-half hours before giving birth; the baby weighed in at 8 lbs 3 oz. and she immediately became the fourth in line to the British throne.
In typical British fashion, the first word of the birth came via a royal town crier, who stood outside the entrance to the hospital dressed in royal attire and clanged bells, calling out the news of the royal birth.
Buckingham Palace issued a press release saying the Duchess of Cambridge, 33, and her newborn were doing well. William, the Duke of Cambridge, 31, was on hand for the birth of his daughter.
The birth announcement outside St. Mary’s Hospital in West London didn’t go unnoticed as a group of royal fans were camped right outside waiting to hear, many dressed in royal regatta. and they gave a robust cheer at the news. In addition to the town crier and the press release, word of the birth was written upon an easel and displayed in front of Buckingham Palace.
Succession to the throne
The succession to the throne now goes like this: Prince Charles, grandfather of Prince George and his new sister, is first in line and is followed by Prince William. Then comes Prince George, born on July 22, 2013, and fourth is now the princess.
By virtue of her birth she knocks her uncle, Prince Harry, the brother of her father, into fifth place. It’s the highest ranking to the throne that a newborn girl has had since Queen Elizabeth’s second child, Beatrice, was born in 1950.
It’s not known when this baby’s name will be announced but it took two days after Prince George’s birth before his name was made public. Betting in the U.K. has a number of names with connections to the royal family leading the way: Alice is in top spot, followed by Charlotte, Elizabeth, Victoria, Diana, Eleanor and Alexandra.
