Berlin-Paris Ukraine bid aims to defend ‘European peace’: Merkel

-

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday that she and French President Francois Hollande's initiative for conflict-wracked Ukraine was aimed at defending "European peace".

Merkel said that the two EU leaders, who will later Friday try to secure Russian support for a peace plan were not acting merely as "neutral intermediaries".

"It's about our interests, German-French but especially European interests... it's about European peace," she told a joint press conference with the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
