Australian reality show participants come under IS fire in Syria

The contestants of an Australian reality show ” Go Back Where You Came From,” a three-part series aiming to start a debate on asylum seekers, were on a visit to a refugee camp in Syria. Portions of the attack have been released by the network as a trailer for the show’s premiere at the end of this month.

The Syrian trip was part of a three-week tour around the world, retracing the path that migrants take as they try to reach Australia. Half of the participants are actively anti-immigration, including anti-refugee campaigner Kim Vuga, who runs the ” Stop the Boats Facebook page” and schoolteacher Andrew Jackson, who fights against the supposed dilution of “Australian culture” by migrants.

One of the participants , Nicole told news.com.au:

When we crossed the border from Iraq into Syria, I kind of thought we would maybe go to a refugee camp near the border, meet some families, but once we crossed the border we drove for like four hours and it kind of dawned on me we were going to an active war zone. We drove closer to them, through an abandoned school that ISIS had been through, full of bullet holes and everything and they started firing at us again. It wasn’t until days later I actually realized, there are people being killed here and we were there actively engaging in war with ISIS; we could have been killed.

Kim Vuga, another contestant , says that she would have joined the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters she met in Syria but for her responsibilities back home, but outlined her uncompromising stance against migrants.
