Rob Ford under 24-hour medical watch, family by his side

Ford battles cancer

The Toronto news station CP24 revealed today a source informed them the 46-year-old Ford, who remains a city councilor, is confined to a bed at Mt. Sinai Hospital and his family is by his side.

CP24 added that “doctors are working to determine if the 46-year-old is healthy enough to undergo more treatment.” Ford has a rare form of soft-tissue cancer in his abdomen called pleomorphic liposarcoma.

Early last year he underwent chemotherapy to shrink his tumor and an operation in May removed what was left of it. Since then, however, his cancer returned and two tumors, described as 5 and 7 centimeters long, were found.

Yesterday, as reported here on DJ, the family of Mr. Ford issued a statement through Ford’s chief of staff Dan Jacobs that Jacobs said was released to categorically deny rumors the former Toronto major had died.

“With his family beside him Councillor Ford is currently in hospital as he continues his battle with cancer,” the statement reads. “The Ford family asks for privacy during this difficult time, and thank the people of Toronto and around the world for their ongoing prayers and support.’

The statement concluded by saying “should there be any developments, a further release will follow.”

Late last year when it was found his cancer had returned, Ford said it was hard to accept but that he was spending all his time doing what his children wanted because he knew his time with them might be severely limited.

“It’s emotional,” he said in October. “I worked so hard to get to this point. I was getting in better shape, I was feeling great, better than I ever have in my life, and now I’m just right back to square one. I have to start all over.”

At that time he urged people to live life each day “to the fullest.”
