The statement was issued Sunday morning by RNC chair Ronna Romney McDaniel. In it, McDaniel took issue with Perez’ statement Trump did not win the election by saying perhaps Perez needs lessons on how the Electoral College works.
McDaniel also wrote Perez should be ashamed of himself and called on Perez to apologize to the millions of Americans who do not share his vision and called on the Democrats to denounce Perez’ rhetoric.
Perez made the comments Friday in Newark, N.J. Speaking at an event put on by the New Jersey Working Families Alliance, the former Obama labour secretary spoke about the failed Republican healthcare bill to replace Obamacare. Speaking of nicknames for the America Health Care Act, Perez mentioned Trumpcare and Ryancare. He then said it should be called “I Don’t Care” because Trump and Ryan “don’t give a shit about the American people.” He accused Trump of wanting his name on everything except the healthcare bill.
Perez also said he chose to make these comments in New Jersey because he wanted to “learn about bullies,” a remark aimed at the state’s governor, Chris Christie. He wanted to learn this so he can deal with “the bully in Washington.”
Perez said Trump does not stand for “our values” and stated “You didn’t win the election.” The DNC chair also praised those who march against Trump and vowed the Democrats will continue the resistance.
Last summer, former DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced she would be stepping down after the convention. Emails released by WikiLeaks showed Wasserman Schultz and the DNC did what they could to favour Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders during the presidential primaries.
In February, the DNC elected Perez as the new chair over the highly-favoured Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN). This was considered another blow to Sanders who was supported by the Minnesota representative.
