Rep. Louie Gohmert: ‘It’s Time to Bomb Iran’

Right Wing Watch reports the Texas Republican was a guest on Wednesday’s edition of “Washington Watch,” a right-wing radio program hosted by Tony Perkins, whose Christian-based Family Research Council has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

“We need to encourage this administration to go take out Iran’s nuclear capability,” Gohmert told Perkins. “I think it’s time to bomb Iran.”

“We need to make clear to Iran: You can play these silly games with our president that buys into them and our secretary of state, but the American people aren’t buying it and you’re going to pay a price,” Gohmert added.

“I’m hoping and praying the president will realize, despite the agenda he has that has put Christians in jeopardy around the world, that he will not want to leave the Democratic Party so devastated that they won’t recover for many decades,” Gohmert continued.

“Maybe he’ll start being more helpful to Israel instead of slapping them around as an unwelcomed [sic] visitor and start treating them like a friend. And maybe once he starts doing that he’ll realize we do need to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities that we know of and anything that they move to fix, we bomb that as well.”

Gohmert also perpetuated the right-wing lie that Obama “threatened to shoot down Israeli planes if they had gone to take out Iran’s nuclear capability.”

“I’m just grateful that Netanyahu had announced there will be no two-state solution because… God says ‘I am going to bring down judgment on nations that divide Israel.’ So I’d kind of hate to be a part of the nation that divides Israel,” he said.

Other US lawmakers have also called for waging war against Iran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. In late 2013, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) called for a nuclear attack against Iranian nuclear sites. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) infamously sang “Bomb, bomb Iran” to the tune of the Beach Boy’s “Barbara Ann” while running for president in 2007.

This, despite consensus by all 16 US intelligence agencies that Iran, which has not initiated a war since the early 18th century, is not trying to develop nuclear weapons, a conclusion also reached by leading Israeli intelligence officials.

Gohmert is no stranger to controversy. As a state district judge in Texas, he once forced an HIV-positive man convicted of motor vehicle theft to notify all future sex partners of his status, and to obtain written consent from them. He also warned of “terror babies,” the children born of women sent to the US by Islamist terror groups who would grow up in America and carry out future terrorist attacks here.

The devout Christian fundamentalist has also compared same-sex marriage to bestiality, blamed the July 2012 Aurora, Colorado cinema massacre on “attacks on Judeo-Christian values” and too few guns, and has also linked the Obama administration to the Muslim Brotherhood, among other eyebrow-raising assertions.
