On his to way to the historic win, Hassan led a dynamic, well-organized campaign and this will prove crucial at the Fall Federal election slated for October. His nomination campaign has galvanized community participation in the electoral arena, adding much needed impetus to NDP’s fortunes in Etobicoke North as the party seeks to launch a formidable campaign in this riding and across Canada come October.
There was an electric and euphoric feeling at the nomination meeting, with the vast majority of the 600 people who were packed into the auditorium spontaneously bursting into chants of “Faisal! Faisal! Faisal!” throughout the evening.
The crowd grew louder when Hassan delivered an inspiring and hopeful nomination speech that chronicled his fateful decision to leave the Horn of Africa as a teenager and eventually end up in Canada.
“Imagine, a young Somali man arriving in Winnipeg, all alone, with only the clothes on his back. That was me in 1990. It’s when and where I seized upon the dream, the ambition, the aspiration that all Canadian newcomers harbour,” said Hassan, describing his incredible journey.
Hassan is well known for his long time progressive community involvement that has seen him serve the NDP in various capacities on the way to his successful nomination for the strategic federal riding. His leadership and vision coupled with his organizational prowess as well as his solid community support would be a valuable asset to the NDP in the federal election.
The highly respected community leader has dedicated his life to serving residents of diverse backgrounds.
His speech included a focus on the issues he will champion during his campaign: an end to income inequality; better supports for seniors; more opportunities for young people.
“Every day we see more evidence of how Harper’s out-of-touch policies and mismanagement are making life harder for Canadians. Every day we see the values that have made Canada a great nation being eroded,” said Hassan, to loud displays of agreement.
Hassan, who currently works for York South—Weston NDP MP Mike Sullivan, was endorsed by the legendary Etobicoke MPP and cabinet minister Ed Philip, who represented north Etobicoke at Queen’s Park for 20 years from 1975 to 1995.
“I am so impressed by Faisal’s hard work and his capacity to get things done. That’s why you’re here supporting this man. He will make a very fine Member of Parliament,” Philip told the meeting.
A proud resident of Etobicoke North, Faisal Hassan was educated at the University of Winnipeg where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Justice, Law Enforcement and Administrative studies. He also holds a Certificate in Project Management from Humber College.
With the nomination secured, Hassan will now start campaigning door-to-door across the sprawling riding. His goal: To make history as Canada’s very first Somali-Canadian MP.
