Donald Trump on New York win: ‘We are really, really rocking’

Numbers favor Trump

If he manages more than 50 percent of the votes in each of the massive state’s congressional districts he could get very nearly all 95 GOP delegates. Other than one district in Manhattan (which John Kasich is leading in) it looks like Trump will either manage that or come close.

Ted Cruz has fared poorly on the night and it looks as if he did not capture any New York delegates.

Nate Silver of fivethrityeight.com has predicted Trump will get 91 of the 95 delegates. The reaction from Trump himself, who spoke to a crowd at his Trump Towers in New York as the results became known, was predictably one of ebullience.

“We don’t have much of a race anymore based on what I’m seeing on television,” the 69-year-old billionaire businessman told his cheering supporters. “We are really, really rocking.”

Trump also said he did better than most thought he would “even in their wildest imagination” and that “Senator Cruz is just about mathematically eliminated.” He noted Kasich is out of it entirely.

Trump: Cruz beaten

Going into Tuesday’s primary Trump lead with 756 delegates, Cruz had 559, Marco Rubio (who dropped of the race last month) had 171 and Kasich had 144. The delegate total needed to get the nomination before the July convention in Cleveland is 1,237.

Should Trump get around 90 delegates out of New York he would need about 57 percent of the remaining delegates to take the nomination and avoid a brokered convention.

Meanwhile, in the Democrat primary in New York Tuesday Hillary Clinton scored a big victory over Bernie Sanders, making his comeback attempt all but over. Sanders is very near to being mathematically eliminated from the race.

Next up are 5 primaries in northeastern states April 26, in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Rhode Island. Both leaders, Trump and Clinton, are expected to do well.
