The pig was subjected to confiscation because it was designated as an asset. The woman had to pay what she owed in support or the pig was going to be taken away, according to The Moscow Times.
The woman’s debt stands at around $4,000USD (300,000 Rubles). On Monday, the court marshals service of the far eastern region of Primorye released a statement, which said that she woman had a history of alcohol abuse.
The statement also said that the woman generally avoided government officials who tried to discuss her child support payments. It went onto say that a court bailiff showed up at her home and ordered the seizure of the pig, but that didn’t happen because the pig was slayed and eaten by the woman.
The woman is now facing a charge of embezzling seized property, and she faces up to two years in jail. The law states that debt collectors can seize animals that are used for commercial gain. Simple house pets cannot be seized, as the law only pertains to farm animals. However, debt collectors may soon be barred from seizing high-end pets, if a bill gets passed.
The bill was drafted by lawmaker Oleg Mikheyev, who slammed seizing pets, and he said the practice was on par with hostage taking.
