Scorpion manicures are the thing in Mexico

AJ News has tweeted about the latest craze coming from Mexico. This involves a person having a manicure. When the nails are painted, and the varnish still wet, tiny scorpions are placed onto the nail. A coating is added which fixes (and kills) the predatory arachnid. Raising the matter is a slightly jocular fashion, AJ News messages “you might wanna really, really, stop yourself from biting these nails.” There is some truth in this, however.

The use of the small scorpions has not proved popular on social media, with many tweeting about the cruelty involved:

Shakil (শাকিল) (@umshakil) @ajplus Chinese people’s love for Rhino’s horn left only around 29000 of them left. Let the animal diversity be free from human love.

Ed (@EdLeeson) @ajplus why must we kill everything?

The Daily Mail notes that the type of scorpion used, due to its relatively diminutive size, is the bark scorpion (Centruroides suffusus.)

The trend began when Lupita Garcia, who is a self-described a scorpion artisan, suggested to the staff at Rocío’s nail parlor in Durango, Mexico, to have a Scorpion-themed manicure. The first wave of scorpion nail art proved popular and many of the city’s nail bars are now offering the service.

The use of scorpions carries risks, for any person who does bite their nails risks exposing themselves to all the side effects of scorpion venom, including swelling, accelerated heart rate, and even death.
