A tattoo in your 80s? Yes, says Judi Dench

Judi Dench is one of the most celebrated of British actors, and a multi-award winner. Dench made her theater debut in 1957. After a long-run with the Royal Shakespeare Company she has appeared in various television and movie role. Most recently she been known as “M” in the continuing James Bond franchise. Dench has been nominated for an Oscar seven times, winning an Academy Award for Shakespeare in Love (1998).

With a long career to look back on, Dench has decided there are plenty of new things to experiment with. These things included getting a tattoo. Apparently, as Surrey Life has reported, Dench almost had a tattoo inked on her body for the 80th birthday but later had second thoughts. A year on, the actor decided to take the plunge.

Her tattoo is composed of two words, with no picture. The words are “carpe diem.” This is a well-known Latin phrase, meaning “seize the day.” The term dates back to Book 1 of the Roman poet Horace’s work Odes (dating to 23 BCE).

Dench had considered, as she told Good Housekeeping magazine, of having a symbol instead of words. “There’s an Indian symbol that I like, which supposedly represents life and love and everything”, she said. “One of the cameramen who worked on The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel told me what it meant, but I’m a bit nervous in case I’m being set up… It might be unbelievably rude!”

The tattoo has received a positive response on social media. One Twitter user – carl salvato (@dowwhiz) –exclaimed “Cool Dame!” While Slate (@Slate) commented: “Judi Dench gets cliche tattoo, proves she’s human after all.”
