Students in Zimbabwe were brewing beer with cereal

Several breakfast cereals have been banned from various schools in Zimbabwe. The reason for the ban is because students at some Zimbabwe schools were using them to brew beer.

At least three schools in southern Zimbabwe have informed parents that their kids should not bring cereals from home because they have been banned.

The schools told the parents that oats and cereals that were made of sorghum would be taken off students starting next Tuesday. One high school said that Morvite powdered cereal and oatmeal porridge were no longer allowed on school property.

Apparently students at some of the schools in were able to create a strong alcoholic beverage. They did this by combining cereals with yeast and brown sugar. Once the students finished mixing everything together, it would then be left to ferment in sunlight.

A chemist in Zimbabwe said that the concoction made from the cereals is dangerous because people cannot control the alcohol content throughout the brewing process.

Some school officials and law enforcement have linked the homemade beer to a rise in Vuzu parties, which are reported to be intoxicated sex marathons.

Church and advocacy groups have protested against such parties over the summer, and last month there were a number of teens arrested for participating in the parties.
