Stephen Hawking criticizes Trump’s environment agenda

Speaking with the BBC, Professor Stephen Hawking has intimated that U.S. President Donald Trump’s instruction for the U.S. government to pull out of the Paris climate agreement will lead to irreversible climate change. Drawing on his vast knowledge of the cosmos, Professor Hawking has said the actions could position a future Earth on a trajectory that will turn the green and blue planet into a hothouse planet like Venus.

Hawking said:

We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump’s action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of two hundred and fifty degrees, and raining sulphuric acid.

By denying the evidence for climate change, and pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, Donald Trump will cause avoidable environmental damage to our beautiful planet, endangering the natural world, for us and our children.

This comment refers to President Donald Trump, whose country is the world’s second biggest producer of greenhouse gases after China, announcing on June 1, 2017 that he would quit the 2015 pact. The Paris Agreement (Accord de Paris) is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020.

Professor Hawking went onto cast doubt on humanity’s current way of running global affairs and states that he see the best hope for mankind as moving to other planets. and that our best hope of survival was to live on other planets. The scientist also expressed concerns about the risks from human aggression damaging life on Earth through sustained military conflict.

The comments about Trump’s environmental policy was made a special event to mark the physicist’s 75th birthday. The event was hosted by Professor Brian Cox, who told The Daily Mirror: “I think one of the reasons we are celebrating Stephen’s birthday this way is not only because of his great contribution to physics but due to his great contribution to the public understanding of science.”
