Nanuq the beluga whale dies at SeaWorld Orlando, cause unknown

Nanuq the beluga: fractured jaw

Nanuq had been on loan and living and being shown at SeaWorld Orlando since 1997. Officials there said that at the time of his death he was being treated for a fractured jaw suffered in “an interaction between two animals that were part of a compatible social group.”

They did not, however, list that injury or the subsequent treatment of it as a cause of death. A necropsy is being done to determine why Nanuq died.

SeaWorld Orlando placed a notice on their Facebook page about the passing of the beloved beluga: “Fans, please join us in remembering one of our favorite beluga whales, Nanuq. An older whale, Nanuq passed away yesterday at the estimated age of 31-32

“As an ambassador for all arctic animals, he has delighted millions of visitors to our Wild Arctic attraction, and has been part of the SeaWorld family since 1997,” the notice continued. “On a loan from our friends at the Vancouver Aquarium. Nanuq was a wonderful whale and dearly loved by his trainers and our vets, as well as guests.”

Fans support SeaWorld

Many fans of SeaWorld and Nanuq have posted on their Facebook page, some making certain to voice not only their condolences for the passing of the whale, but also their support for SeaWorld:

“SeaWorld, please ignore the haters who will only twist this sad event for their own selfish purpose,” Rebecca S. wrote. “Your true fans and supporters mourn the loss of Nanuq with you. We know he lived a great life in your care, and he will be missed by all whose lives he touched and inspired.”
