Downtown Toronto shooting
The shooting occurred at Bay and Dundas St. in the city’s main core at the Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre Hotel. The shooting took place outside, in front of the hotel, located at 525 Bay St., which is not far from Toronto City Hall. Officers are searching in and around the hotel and had closed off the immediate area to traffic.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene at 2:45 a.m. (one report has the time as one hour earlier) and found a man with gunshot wounds on the sidewalk in front of the hotel. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police say the dead man is 27-year-old Kabil Abdulkhadir; they have not released any information on a possible suspect or a motive. It’s unclear if they have any witnesses or security tape of the shooting.
Homidide squad on scene
Guests at the Marriot can leave but only on foot. The Toronto Sun reports police told guests that until further notice they cannot return to the hotel after leaving, and no one can register. It’s unclear if police believe the shooter may have fled into the hotel.
There have been a host of shootings in the city in the past few months and the death of Abdulkhadir is the 32nd homicide in Toronto this year. The Toronto Police Services website lists 25 homicides in 2014.
The Toronto police Homicide Squad are conducting the investigation.
