Woman accused of murder confessed to tampering with kayak

According to New York’s PIX11 News, prosecutors in the case stated that 35-year-old Angelika Graswald admitted to tampering with the kayak that her fiance Vincent Viafore, a project manager, occupied during the trip. At a bail hearing this week, it was discovered that Graswald felt “trapped” in the relationship with Viafore and was the sole beneficiary of a $250,000 life insurance policy. Before the incident, it is alleged she had already began to make plans for the pay-out.

Graswald told investigators that she felt “happiness and relief” after Viafore’s kayak capsized and that “it felt good knowing he would die.” Witnesses have reported that after Viafore went into the water, Graswald capsized her own kayak to make it look to investigators like she made attempts to save her fiance.

Graswald’s attorney said of the remarks made to authorities, “she was suffering from hypothermia, she was suffering from the loss of her fiance. As we know, there was a very clear language barrier (and) the more time we spent with her the more we realized how confusing it can be when you speak with her.”

A male body was recovered from the Hudson River on Wednesday almost one month after Vincent Viafore went missing on April 19. However it has been reported that it is not that of Viafore.

The judge has set Graswald’s bail at $3 million.
