The theft of the vehicle, a four-door, tan 1997 Toyota Camry, took place Sunday at approximately 3:41 p.m. EDT. The car had been left by its owner, the father of the infant, near Highway 27 and Albion Road.
Police have not yet released information on how the baby was found. They continue to search for the man believed to have stolen the car with the child inside. He is described as a white male, 40 to 45 years old with short blond hair; police said he was carrying a backpack.
The mother of the child told media she was relieved that her son has been found safe and unharmed. She thanked Toronto police for their successful efforts. The boy was found in the west end of the city.
The remainder of this story was filed before the boy was found:
The vehicle, with the child inside, was seen speeding north on Highway 27 toward Albion Road and Steeles Avenue West and police are asking anyone who may have seen a tan Camry to contact them by calling 911. “We are appealing to anyone who sees the (stolen Camry) to please (call) police immediately,” a police statement said.
Police said the baby is about 15 pounds and is wearing blue pants with a striped blue and yellow ‘onsie.’ They did not release his name nor the name of his father or family. The baby is reported to have short dark hair.
Police have not said if they believe the child was the intended target or if the man was unaware the child was inside and was only looking to steal a car.
