article imageThai man likes post criticizing king on Facebook, gets arrested

By Owen Weldon     Dec 11, 2015 in Crime
Samut Prakan - Thanakorn Siripaiboon, 27, reposted an infographic on social media and he 'liked' a photo from an anti-monarchy group. As a result, he was arrested by Thailand police.
The factory worker was arrested near his workplace near Bangkok because the photo he "liked" was edited to portray Thailand's monarch in a negative light. The infographic he reposted accused authorities of corruption.
Thanakorn is charged with computer crimes, lese majeste and sedition. Under Thai law, someone can be sentenced up to 15 years on each count of insulting the king, queen, heir or regent.
Authorities said Thanakorn confessed to the charges. Authorities added that he admitted he wanted to incite members of the group he shared it with to oppose the military.
The incident occurred on December 2. Authorities said Thanakorn clicked a link on an edited photo of the king and he shared it with his 608 friends on Facebook.
The infographic he shared was about Rajabhakti Park, a multi-million dollar tourist attraction built by the Thai army. The park is under construction contracts allegedly riddled with kickbacks, as well as inflated costs.
Thanakorn isn't the only one who has been arrested and charged with sedition. Last month, a woman was charged with sedition for sharing the same photo about the park scandal. The woman is still under investigation.
